The paramount chief of the Burebasaga confederacy, Ro Teimumu Kepa, has stressed the importance of village levies at the Rewa Provincial Council meeting.
With the collection date for levies set for July, Ro Teimumu and council chairman Uraia Waibuta said it was important that these were paid up to allow the running of the provincial council office.
At the first day of the meeting on Wednesday a decision was reached for the council to write a letter to the iTaukei Affairs Ministry seeking answers on the reduction of funds set aside for all the 14 provinces in Fiji.
The province wants to know why council members will now have to pay for all matters pertaining to running of provincial offices.
Mr Waibuta told the council members that each village should collect $1500 as their levy.
“You are all aware of the situation we are going through and as the Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi stressed, our levies are very important in order to have our provincial office remain functional,” he said.
The provincial council office was also told to use money collected from the Rewa Day celebration. It was revealed that of the more than $150,000 collected, $50,000 was used to cover expenses.
Meanwhile, the minutes of the 2013 meeting were passed yesterday after it was not passed in the first day.
This was because of questions over the validity of the meeting because several council members did not attend last year’s meeting.
