Locals in illicit
drugs smuggling worry FRCA’s Tikolevu

A 39-year-old Nadi man is in Police custody after traces of cocaine were found in an envelope sent to him from Hong Kong through the Nadi Post Office mail system.
A Police raid on the address, which was to a Nadi-based company, found other alleged illegal substances on Saturday afternoon, and investigations are ongoing.
The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority confirmed that the envelope contained 408 grams of energy supplements and drew the suspicion of a Customs officer, who discovered bitter-smelling white powder. A preliminary test verified traces of cocaine and Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), which are included in FRCAs dangerous drugs list and are illegal to import and possess.
Further tests at the Koronivia Research Station substantiated the cocaine mix.
The incident has prompted further concerns by FRCA on the increasing number of locals involved in smuggling illegal drugs.
“While the increasing cases of the illicit trade is of great concern, of greater concern is the boldness of Fijians to commit the crime,” FRCA chief executive Jitoko Tikolevu said.
