No one was injured from the fire that broke out on a fishing vessel anchored in the Suva Harbour yesterday. Korean nationals who were on board the ‘DTAM 5’ fishing vessel escaped unharmed. Manager Port Regulatory and Emergency Response Captain Philip Hill confirmed that no one was injured in the blaze.
“None of the Korean Nationals are hurt but the fire is not under control due to the strong wind,” Captain Hill said.
“The anchor had been cut loose because the fire is yet to be distinguished and we still need to find out the cause of fire. The only thing we know is that it started from the engine compartment.”
Witness Sesalia Inoke said crews from other boats anchored in the harbour helped try to douse the fire.
Another witness, Peni Tupou, who is a security officer in one of the vessels that was anchored near the ‘DTAM 5’ alleged that the vessel had just returned from being serviced. The fishing vessel belongs to Golden Ocean.
