LOSALINI RASOQOSOQO
Vutia, Rewa
Ro Teimumu Kepa, paramount chief of Rewa, yesterday called on her people to build the proverbial walls of Rewa against outside influence and interference.
Speaking at the opening of the Rewa Provincial Council meeting in Muanaicake Village community hall, Vutia, she reminded them not to forget the vanua and its traditions because the vanua came first.
She emphasised the importance of the church. Ro Teimumu said when their traditional and religious links were intact, it would bring prosperity.
Speaking in i-Taukei , Ro Teimumu said they should not be blamed for their incompetence and failure to recognise the vanua and the church.
“It is clear to everyone that the vanua existed before religion was introduced. It was because of the vanua that Christianity was accepted,” Ro Teimumu said.
“Sometimes people get mixed up. We must be reminded that the vanua and the church were there before the Government.”
Ro Teimumu’s returned to the council meeting a year after she boycotted it. She stayed away in protest against the appointment of the new chairman, Uraia Waibuta in April last year as her replacement.
The meeting continues today.
